TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation.

In simple terms, it is a therapy that uses a small, battery-operated device to deliver mild electrical pulses through your skin. You place sticky pads (electrodes) on or near the area that hurts, and the machine sends a gentle tingling or buzzing sensation into your nerve pathways.

How It Helps With Pain

TENS doesn't cure the underlying cause of an injury, but it provides temporary pain relief through two main biological tricks:

Closing the "Pain Gate": Your nerve pathways can only process a certain amount of information at once. The gentle electrical buzzing from the TENS unit travels to your brain faster than the slower pain signals do. By flooding your nerves with this tingling sensation, it effectively "blocks" the pain signals from getting through.
